I think of myself as an old-fashioned woodsman, working largely with round wood and old tools. I made my first hazel hurdle back in the early eighties but my craftsmanship now also embraces work in ash, oak, birch and sweet chestnut. I specialise in cleft (or riven) wood, which produces a stronger and more durable product than sawing. I cut most of my own materials and work them by hand using a range of traditional tools and devices.
As well as wattle hurdles I can provide a range of gates, gate-hurdles, chestnut post and rail, and oak-paling fencing. These are usually made to order and may be only available seasonally.
Other garden products include wooden hay rakes and besom brooms.
Laths, shingles and tent pegs can be supplied in large or small quantities.
Sawn oak does finds a place in durable garden furniture and small framed buildings.
I can be seen demonstrating at many local shows, including the Royal Cornwall and at the Roadford Lake Woodfair. I run a number of courses throughout the year, in conjunction with both SWF and the Yarner Trust.
