Heartwood Creations began trading in 1998 with the assistance of the Silvanus Trust's Woodworks scheme. Its aim was to produce quality products from locally sourced 'waste' timber. The business has now expanded to encompass a whole range of woodland based skills and teaching.
The business is now located at Pentiddy woods, a woodland and Permaculture based venture in Pensilva. The corner of a cattle shed has been converted into a workshop where a wide range of quality products are created, and is the perfect venue for a whole range of courses offered by Heartwood Creations.
Pentiddy woods is a 27 acre site with 13 acres of existing broadleaf woodland. Over the next five years 8.5 acres of coppice woodland will be planted, with Sweet Chestnut, Ash and Hazel, as well as a small willow bed. The aim of Pentiddy woods is to provide a diverse educational experience, and Heartwood Creations is part of this.
Heartwood Creations produces both indoor and garden furniture, structures such as gates, fences and rose arches, provides a range of services including hedgelaying and woodland management, and runs courses on many aspects of traditional woodland crafts.
Courses include Green woodworking, Chairmaking, Rush seating, Hedgelaying and Bushcraft. Workshops are also run for people to make their own Shaving horse or pole-lathe. Some courses are run through other organisations such as South West Forest, BTCV 'Taproutes' the Workers Educational Association, and Cornwall College.
Services are at present provided for a number of organisations including the National Trust, Cornwall County Council and English Nature.
